The Ethibel screening methodology = an integrated and multi-stakeholder approach of sustainability

The Ethibel SRI screening methodology integrates a people-planet-profit approach with a permanent dialogue with all the company's stakeholders at every stage of the research and evaluation process.

The main features of this 'fourth generation'-approach are:
- an integrated approach to sustainability;
- a multi-stakeholder approach on the level of information gathering and evaluation;
- a clear distinction between research and evaluation responsibilities.

The analytical framework for the company research consists of an extensive checklist of “sustainability criteria”, divided into four areas: internal social policy, environmental policy, external social policy and the ethical economic policy. These four areas cover the whole domain of the social responsibility of companies. Each is divided into several themes, and each theme is divided into several topics. For each topic, there is a set of indicators and criteria, linked to a rating system.

A specific aspect of the Ethibel research process is the permanent dialogue with all the stakeholders, including the company, at every stage of the research and evaluation process.

In order to avoid conflicts of interest and bias, the research activities have been separated from the evaluation procedure. Research is carried out by the CSR research company Vigeo, which stringently applies the research methodology developed by Ethibel. The evaluation procedure, based on the research results, is organised by Ethibel. Furthermore, Ethibel Board of Directors calls on the advice of an external and independent board of experts before taking a decision.

All the companies in the Index are included in the Ethibel Investment Register. To learn more about the research methodology, go to Ethibel's Evaluation Scheme, have a look at the selection procedure or download the Ethibel Sustainability Index Rulebook.
